ORIGINAL
PENCIL ART -- MERMAID PICS
Original pencil art, this is
one of the many mermaid pics on display in the online galleries.
Mermaid are symbols that cross culture and time because they
come from deep within the human mind (which is why there are
so many mermaid pics on display). This is an early work (pre
1995), so the use of symbolism is relatively simple. More
complex surreal settings are gradually introduced in later
mermaid pics. A certificate of authenticity, signed by the
artist, is included with purchase.

NOTES:
Mythology
abounds with symbols of man's eternal conflict: mermaids,
centaurs, fairies, etc. Beings that are half human ("I
think therefore I am") and half animal (I want and I
want it NOW!). It's is the process of bringing the two disparate
sides together that produces some of the human races nobler
moments (and make for GREAT fine art mermaid pics, etc.).
Each of these half human, half animal constructs represent
a different aspect of the conflict. In the case of the mermaid
we are dealing with half human, half fish. Fish lives in water
and water is (among many other things) a symbol for the subconscious;
the human part represents the conscious. The mermaid is an
excellent symbol: powered by the subconscious, the conscious
part thinks it's in control <lol>. Joseph Campbell has
a wonderful diagram of this whole thing in his book, "The
Power of Myth." If you have an opportunity, check it
out! It's an eye-opener :)
This
work of original pencil art also includes other dualities
(the mermaid, the skull): the living vs. the dead, the fantastic
vs. the scientific, etc. Plus there is an oblique reference
to Hamlet's soliloquoy in the title <g>. And you thought
it was one of the simpler mermaid pics <g>. Go figure
;) The skull is a multifaceted symbol too :)
